Ageing of the wine : Traditional vinification is carried out in cement vats. Vatting lasts for between 20 and 30 days, depending on the vintage and, after the malolactic fermentation, the wines go into barrel (one-third renewed every year) and remain there for 12 months. The final selection of which wines will go to make the final blend for Château d’Angludet is made in the following February or March. The process of selection is strict (as only the best wines can be included) and is done by a series of tastings. Once the final blend has been done, the wine is fined with egg whites and very lightly filtered before bottling.

2006 Vintage information : After a cold, dry winter, vine growth got off to a late start. Budburst was even and regular. The summer kicked off with an unusually sunny, dry and hot June and July, which allowed the vines and grapes to develop well. August was relatively cool with regular showers that kept growers constantly on the alert for disease. High temperatures in early September allowed the grapes to ripen. These high temperatures (35°C) led to proportionally low Merlot yields compared with the usual 35-40 percent After a period of grey weather with some rain and storms, harvesting began in the sunshine on September 19th. The last of the Merlot was picked on the 21st Harvesting resumed on October 2nd with the Cabernet Sauvignon after a break of a few sunny days which fostered ripening. The Petit Verdot was picked on October 2nd and 3rd. The weather during the 2006 harvest was changeable, with some showers but little overall rain in the Margaux appellation which enjoys a very special micro-climate.

TASTING NOTES:

Made by Happy Canyon Vineyard of Santa Ynez Valley, this 2005 small production (200 cases) of Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon /Cabernet Franc blend is the namesake of the owners Tom and Laura Barrack who also happen to own through Colony Capital the venerable Chateau Lascombes, the classified 2nd growth from Margaux. So with Bordeaux on my mind (versus Sideway’s Pinot Noir country that Santa Ynez / Santa Barbara is famed for) I was impressed with a wine of medium garnet color with red fruit aromas interlaced with cedar box and oak notes. On the palate the Merlot part shines through with smooth action of red cherries, backed by a solid backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon based firm yet slightly harsh tannins that still has time to evolve. Overall the wine is in balance with fresh acidity that highlights the fruit. This wine is still young as Bordeaux style blends go so it is a very nice effort. Will continue to evolve and age well for a minimum of 3-5 years.
