The Sichel family also owns Chateau Palmer, the renowned 3rd growth of the 1855 classification amongst many other ventures. The 2006 wine I tasted has a a fragrant nose with distinct cherry and berry characters. On the palate, the wine has very well developed tannins that act in balance with the layered fruit and vanilla notes. This is the seductive, elegant and feminine wine of Margaux! POW 90.

Technical Information:
Bottling : Bottled at the Château
Packaging : Stamped wooden case
Ageing of the wine : Traditional vinification is carried out in cement vats. Vatting lasts for between 20 and 30 days, depending on the vintage and, after the malolactic fermentation, the wines go into barrel (one-third renewed every year) and remain there for 12 months. The final selection of which wines will go to make the final blend for Château d’Angludet is made in the following February or March. The process of selection is strict (as only the best wines can be included) and is done by a series of tastings. Once the final blend has been done, the wine is fined with egg whites and very lightly filtered before bottling.

Final blend : 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot.

2006 Vintage information : After a cold, dry winter, vine growth got off to a late start. Budburst was even and regular. The summer kicked off with an unusually sunny, dry and hot June and July, which allowed the vines and grapes to develop well. August was relatively cool with regular showers that kept growers constantly on the alert for disease. High temperatures in early September allowed the grapes to ripen. These high temperatures (35°C) led to proportionally low Merlot yields compared with the usual 35-40 percent After a period of grey weather with some rain and storms, harvesting began in the sunshine on September 19th. The last of the Merlot was picked on the 21st Harvesting resumed on October 2nd with the Cabernet Sauvignon after a break of a few sunny days which fostered ripening. The Petit Verdot was picked on October 2nd and 3rd. The weather during the 2006 harvest was changeable, with some showers but little overall rain in the Margaux appellation which enjoys a very special micro-climate.

I tasted the golden 2006 Coutet ( a Premier Grand Cru Sauternes-Barsac from the 1855 classification) and found it to be extremely fresh with none of the heaviness you would expect from a dessert Sauternes wine. The lively acidity comes through on the palate and accentuates the honey, pineapple, vanilla, orange rind, and lemon zest notes all mashed up in Botrytris heaven (Botrytis is the “noble rot” that gives the Sauterne/Barsac wines their unique flavor). I would enjoy this wine not just after dinner as dessert in itself with Stilton Cheese but also as an aperitif with a terrine of foie gras over an extremely thin and well toasted baguette crust. For the seafood lovers this elixir would pair well with a main course of scallops sauted til golden with olive oil, sea salt, cracked pepper and a splash of lemon. The wine is composed of 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. The Baly family have owned the 95 acre Chateau since 1977 when Marcel Baly acquired the 95 acre property. Marcel’s sons Dominic and Phillipe took over running the operation in the 1980′s. Numerous improvements and upgrades to the property has taken place under their stewardship. The Chateau entered into an exclusive distribution partnership in 1995 with Baroness Phillipine Rothschild of the Mouton Rothschild / Opus 1 et al fame which has helped to enhance Coutet’s reputation and prestige. I say beaucoup d’efforts!!
