Jessica flew down to San Diego and I had a chance to taste her wines and do a quick video interview on my iPhone (OK it is just the 3Gs and I have not upgraded to the iPhone 4 … wine antenna anybody?). Jessica with father (et le Père…alright Et Fille sounds better) have just celebrated their 6th release with the 2008 offerings of Pinot Noir wines sourced from select growers as well as their own and very Burgundian tiny estate of 1 acre. The 2008 Vintage in Oregon is being heralded as outstanding due to a late yet long growing season. Besides the 2008 Pinot Noir wines, the winery also released a crisp yet bright 2008 Viognier from the Deux Vert Vineyard. 144 cases, about $24 Retail, POW 88. Plus a tiny amount (24 cases) of 2008 Rose of Pinot Noir, of which a sample bottling did not make it on the plane, no doubt since Jessica is hoarding the whole lot as she made it sans Dad. She calls it her baby: Fille’s Fille!

Here is the rundown on the 2008 Et Fille Pinot Noirs followed by my POW rating based on the 100 point scale:

2008 Et Fille Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: A blend of grapes sourced from 7 vineyards, the wine exhibits aromas of freshly picked mulberries and has a round texture with bright fruit and subtle acidity. Barrel aged for 9 months (21% new), alcohol 13.1%, 931 cases made., about $25 Retail. POW 89

2008 Et Fille Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir: This Vineyard was originally planted by Jim Maresh in the Dundee Hills on lava soil and has produced legendary Pinot Noir for more than thirty years. This wine builds up its profile in the glass and gives you measured bits of fruit and tannins in an elegant yet complex package. Bravo for the relatively low alcohol level at 12.9%. Barrel aged for 9 months (40 % new). about $42 Retail. 100 cases made. POW 91

2008 Et Fille Kalita Vineyard Pinot Noir: There are moments when a certain wine makes a lasting impression and you remember the combination of aromas, flavors and finish for years after. I can recall clearly the 1961 La Tache, 1989 Chateau Beychevelle, 2004 Ambullneo Pinot Noir Canis Major and the 2005 Chateu Pavie Macquin St Emilion amongst a small handful of other great wines. This wine is hereby added to the gang, bravo Et Fille! Sourced from the Kalita Vineyard located in the Yamhill-Carlton district of Oregon, the wine’s fruit is delicate yet is underlain by a tightly wound acidity that delivers the exact doses of red berries and kumquat marmalade for a long pleasurable finish. Barrel aged for 9 months (42% new), alcohol 13.3%, 206 cases made., about $38 Retail. POW 93

I shot this video using my iPhone so it is a bit quirky. The delivery of wine in methods other than the conventional bottle has been gaining momentum.

I do support the concept of wine taps in all their formats as I see it solving the most common problem when ordering wine by the glass: Oxydation (freshness) and wine temperature.

I distinctly remember an August summer night two years ago when the core idea of the Prince of Wine germinated: Create a wine video blog to share my life long love of wine with viewers in an informal and non-intimidating way. The choice for wine blogging is huge. There are hundreds of good and active wine bloggers who are equally passionate about wine and who are becoming the alternative voice to the wine heavyweights of Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Hence I was not interested in publishing another wine blog but I felt that a gap existed for the general public who loved wine but was intimidated by all the wine language and the mystery surrounding it. My other love has been film so I thought it would be great to combine the two interests into a dedicated wine video blog. A year later, the site was launched on June 1, 2008. Since then it has been a great journey. I have met a great number of people who have encouraged me to push along and I am continuously humbled and amazed by how vast the field of wine knowledge is. Obviously the moniker “Prince of Wine” is a playful exercise in self indulgence and had I known everything about wine then I would have been the King of Wine or the Emperor of Wine!! The field of video blogging continues to evolve and I am always thinking of ways to send the message out without getting bogged down in the technicalities that inevitably arise. Social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook are overtaking many blogs due to the “immediacy factor” of posting. I have incorporated Twitter platform in our front page and I now find myself posting Twitter updates frequently about the lifestyle of wine. Things evolve continually. The newspaper industry is losing subscriptions in droves as readers flock to the web for news but now the social networking sites are creating a revolution within the web where blogs like newspapers are risking being outdated as they cannot match the immediacy factor. I carry a pocket video camera for capturing daily stories that I find hard to share given the current format of the website. Hence, beginning this week I am excited to announce the launch of the iPOW reports. The iPOW reports will be video posts about wine, food, travel and personalities that I come upon in my daily life. Think of iPOW reports as snippets of information about the lifestyle of wine that you will get just like you tuning in to your favorite TV station for the latest daily news. We will continue the Wine Review Shorts and there will be some overlapping of subject matter. We will continue to tweak, experiment and evolve and I thank you!

Another wine From the San Francisco based Magnanimus Wine Group that specializes in making wines sourced from sustainable, organic and biodynamic grapes: Located at 1900’ elevation along the Sierra Nevada Mountains’ western slopes, Ponderosa, Old River Road Cellars Vineyard has been CCOF-certified organic since 1993. This high elevation vineyard site yields organic grapes resulting in a well crafted garnet colored wine with aromas of dark cherry intertwined with earthy and spicy notes. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with bright acidity and forward tannins with compelling notes of dark fruits and earth and a medium finish. Comprised of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc and is barrel-aged in new French oak for 8 months prior to blending and bottling. 2500 cases produced. Alcohol 13.5%

From the San Francisco based Magnanimus Wine Group that specializes in making wines sourced from sustainable, organic and biodynamic grapes: Pija, Spanish for “rascal”. The grapes were sourced from different vineyards, all sustainably farmed, particularly those characteristic of inland Mendocino’s wine-growing history. Mattern Ranch, located on the Talmage Bench east of the Russian River, provides dry-farmed old vine Zinfandel and a younger planting of Petite Syrah. The Charbono is from Venturi Vineyards’ ninety-year old, late-to-ripen vines. The lots were fermented separately then blended to produce the Pija Blend. Aged in older French oak and stainless steel, the wine exhibits aromas of red plums, black cherries and spice. On the attack, a cascade of red fruits and wild berries emerge harmoniously with earth and chocolate notes underlined by evolved tannins and medium acidity. This is a food friendly wine, perfectly paired with slow baked short ribs flash grilled with spicy barbecue sauce. 1200 cases produced. Blend: 50% Zinfandel, 45% Petite Syrah, 5% Charbono. This is the early trailer we used for launching our wine show campaign. The food footage was shot at Laurel’s restaurant in San Diego. We had a lot of fun pairing the wine and food there.
